A new Ballarat music festival is being organised by Sovereign Hill and will feature musicians such as Kate Ceberano and music of the gold rush era.

Sovereign Hill's executive officer Jeremy Johnson says the south-west Victorian festival adds to other targeted school holiday programs that have been running for two years.

"The school holiday program through September and October will focus on music, so it was a natural extension in our planning from that, that we felt it was time to do a music event," he said.

"And even though we have those contemporary music acts, we've also got a large number of acts that are based around the music of the goldfields and that era."
